The orientation for freshmen took place at IWHR from 2nd to 6th September. The year 2019 is the first year of expansion of admission with 110 students admitted to IWHR including 53 doctoral candidates and 55 master’s candidates. The number of total students at IWHR is more than 300. Moreover, this year is the first year of admitting international students with two Ph.D. candidates from Pakistan and Ethiopia, which symbolizes a new chapter of cultivating international students at IWHR.
The postgraduate opening orientation ceremony started with the National Anthem on 6th September. On behalf of the Dean of IWHR Graduate School, Prof. Wang Xingyong the Vice-Dean of IWHR Graduate School, attended the conference and delivered a speech to introduce the basic situations of students’ education in IWHR. Representing all supervisors at IWHR, professor Li Yanfeng from Department of Irrigation and Drainage gave a lecture of entrance education. All new students, alumni representative, international students’ representative and staff of IWHR Graduate School attended the ceremony.

Prof. Wang gave a systemic introduction about the development history of IWHR Graduate School, and remarkable achievements in terms of discipline development, talent cultivation, and scientific research achievements. He also introduced the teaching target, the concept of cultivation, and the ideas for graduate education. Also, he explained the rules and regulations of graduate cultivations. Finally, Prof. Wang encouraged students to be ambitious, thoughtful and cooperative while being diligent, self-disciplined and mindful, and expressed his expectation that new students can adapt to the new environment as quickly as possible and achieve great progress at IWHR.

Professor Li, the supervisors’ representative, shared his experiences in respect of graduate cultivation. The dissertation supervised by him won the IWHR outstanding master’s dissertation in 2019. He introduced the specialties and advantages of IWHR based on his own studying and supervising experiences. He expressed his expectation to all students that they should expand their visions and learn how to be committed and cooperative. He also urged students to adhere to the bottom line of academic ethics and encouraged them to remember their initial intention and dream, take responsibility and move forward on the road of water scientific research.

In the morning of 5th September, Prof. Wang Xingyong, the Vice-Dean, led more than 90 students to visit Daxing experimental base. They visited the testing hall of the Department of Sediment Research, hydraulic mechanical laboratory, hydraulic experiment hall and testing base of the Department of Irrigation and Drainage. Experts from relevant departments provided detailed explanation to them. During the visiting, students listened to the interpretation carefully, asked concerned questions, and were deeply engrossed in discussion. They have obtained systematic and comprehensive understanding of experimental platform system of IWHR in this process. In addition, lectures of fire protection and telecom fraud prevention were also arranged during the orientation.
