On May 25th and 26th, the 2023 Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) Week Activities on Water Resources was successfully held in Beijing with the theme of “Promoting Water Resources Cooperation for the Next Golden Five Years to Benefit People in the Lancang-Mekong Region”. 7 international and 1 domestic students of IWHR were invited to attend the event. Director General Jin Hai of the Department of International Cooperation, Science and Technology of the Ministry of Water Resources, Ambassador Yu Hong of the Department of Asian Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Secretary and vice president Peng Jing of China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research (IWHR), diplomatic envoys of the five Mekong countries in China and other officials attended and addressed the opening ceremony. Director Hao Zhao of Lancang-Mekong Water Resources Cooperation Center presided over the event.
During the event, international students of our institute and student representatives from Tsinghua University and Hohai University participated in the Lancang-Mekong Youth Round Table Conference on “Water Resources Benefiting People in the Lancang-Mekong Region, New Mission for the Next Five Years”. Combining with the current situation of water resources in their home countries, students had in-depth discussions on climate change, flood and drought disaster management, sustainable management and utilization of water resources in the Lancang-Mekong region. Apart from that, students also visited the Tuancheng Lake Water Conservancy Project, including the exhibition room of South to North Water Diversion Project, the Open Channel Memorial Square and the Tuancheng Lake regulating pool and other important facilities.
After the meeting, the international students said that the event greatly promoted their understanding of water conservancy in China and Asia, and in the future, they will continue to learn and exchange with the youth of various countries through the platform of IWHR.
